Stage play “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead” based on the novel by Olga Tokarczuk featuring Liya Akhedzhakova in Germany 2026
The performance is based on the novel of the same name by Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk, winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Literature. The staging transforms the mystical detective story into a multilayered theatrical work, intertwining noir, irony, poetry, and philosophical reflections on the human being and their place in the world.
Plot and features of the production:
At first glance, it is a story about mysterious murders in rural Poland, a forest noir with detective elements. But behind the gripping storyline lies a profound contemplation of life and death, injustice, and the harshness of society.
The main character — eccentric Mrs. Duszejko, a lonely retired teacher — unexpectedly takes on the investigation and fights for the truth. Her character seems tailor-made for Liya Akhedzhakova, who brilliantly embodies her with irony, courage and deep humanity.
Serving as Duszejko’s “alter ego” is actress and singer Musya Totibadze. Her musical numbers, written to the poetry of English mystic William Blake, give the production a special atmosphere. Live music and the stage imagery of forest creatures create a unique artistic world.
