Augsburg — the city with the highest theft rate in the region

According to the latest crime statistics published on 21 November 2025, Augsburg has become the city with the highest theft rate in the entire Swabia region. The report, prepared by law enforcement and analysed by Augsburger Allgemeine, shows a significant increase in property-related crimes, including pickpocketing, residential break-ins and bicycle thefts.

Police data indicate that in 2025, Augsburg recorded a particularly high number of incidents involving the theft of personal belongings in public places — at tram stops, on public transport, in shopping centres and at major city events. Authorities emphasise that pickpocketing has become increasingly professional: offenders often operate in groups and target areas with high pedestrian traffic.

Bicycle theft remains one of the city’s most pressing issues. Augsburg has long been considered a “bicycle-friendly city”, and this popularity makes it an attractive target for thieves. Police report that most thefts occur at night, with offenders often using tools to quickly break locks.

Another worrying trend is the rise in residential burglaries in certain districts. The report states that criminals frequently observe houses in advance and strike at times when residents are at work. In response, police recommend installing modern security systems and strengthening cooperation with neighbours.

Authorities highlight that the statistics also show positive developments: the number of solved cases is increasing. In 2025, several groups specialising in stealing mobile phones and wallets in the city centre were arrested. However, despite these successes, the overall crime level remains high, and officials stress the need for additional prevention.

The city administration has already announced plans to improve lighting in problem areas, expand surveillance camera coverage and increase citizen engagement. Information campaigns on protecting personal belongings are also expected to intensify.

Residents are actively discussing the situation on social media, reporting that the rise in crime affects their sense of safety. Many are calling for increased police presence, especially in the evening and on weekends.

Augsburg police urge citizens to remain vigilant, keep personal belongings secure and report suspicious activity. Despite ongoing prevention efforts, the 2025 statistics show that theft remains one of the city’s primary challenges.
