The Berlin Red Town Hall (Rotes Rathaus), built in 1869 and named after its red brick façade, is rightly considered one of the most captivating landmarks of the capital. As a rare witness to bygone eras, it carefully preserves echoes of history.
Since 1870, it has traditionally housed the office of the Governing Mayor of Berlin and the Berlin Senate (the government of the federal state of Berlin, Senat von Berlin).
Since December 11, an unusual permanent exhibition has been open to Berlin residents and guests of the capital, bearing the elaborate title: “Berlin Unpacks – Guest Gifts from 75 Years.”
The exhibition includes around 500 commemorative gifts and unique souvenirs received by the Berlin authorities (both of West Berlin, a city with special status, and East Berlin, the capital of the GDR) from representatives of the international community since 1950. The exhibited items vividly illustrate the multifaceted nature of Berlin’s relationships with other countries and cultures. At the same time, they reflect the changes that have taken place over the decades — including at the governmental and diplomatic levels.
It is noteworthy that the selection and arrangement of these rare objects were based solely on their historical and cultural significance, without any judgment of historical events or political contexts. One of the display cases features gifts received by the city in recent years. The exhibition has been organized and curated by Stadtmuseum Berlin GmbH.
In this context, the statement of the current Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, is particularly significant:
“Berlin reveals its secrets: the gifts and souvenirs received by the city’s highest officials over the past 75 years offer fascinating insights into each respective period and into Berlin’s international relations. Stadtmuseum Berlin GmbH has approached the research and presentation of these objects with great enthusiasm. I invite the people of Berlin and all visitors to explore the new permanent exhibition at the Red Town Hall and discover something new.”
The exhibition is open free of charge from Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
