Renovation of the historic Salzmann factory begins in Kassel
A new phase has begun in Kassel for one of the city’s most well-known industrial landmarks – the former Salzmann factory. Located in the Bettenhausen district, the historic complex had remained in a neglected condition for many years and was long considered a problematic urban site. It is now set to be gradually restored and integrated into Kassel’s modern urban landscape.
Construction work started after the completion of preparatory measures and initially focuses on clearing the site, removing damaged structures and stabilising the preserved buildings. The aim of the project is to maintain the factory’s historical character while adapting it for new purposes. In the long term, the area is expected to accommodate residential, social and public facilities.
A key element of the project is its social focus. As part of the redevelopment, a residential care facility for elderly people with approximately 160 inpatient care places is planned. This will give the former industrial site a new role as a socially oriented urban space.
The redevelopment of the Salzmann factory is seen as an important component of the development of eastern Kassel. The project not only preserves the city’s industrial heritage but also contributes to revitalising the district, improving infrastructure and creating new opportunities for the use of historic buildings.
Implementation will take place in several stages over the course of several years. City officials emphasise that the project represents a careful approach to historic preservation while meeting the demands of contemporary urban development.
