At around 6:30 p.m., residents of the Sportplatzring area reported a strong smell of gas. Firefighters and police arrived within minutes and cordoned off the site.
According to the Hamburg Fire Department, the leak originated from an industrial facility. The gas spread through the building and partially into the surrounding air.
Twenty-seven people, including employees and nearby residents, suffered symptoms of poisoning and breathing difficulties. They were treated on site and taken to local hospitals.
Emergency services blocked the area within a 300-meter radius. Gas supply was shut off, and specialists conducted air quality measurements. Around 80 rescue workers were deployed.
Preliminary reports suggest a malfunction in the ventilation system as a possible cause. The police have launched an investigation into the incident.
