Essen launches intelligent city lighting
On 25 November 2025, the city of Essen officially launched the pilot phase of its Smart Street Lighting project. The new lamps, equipped with motion sensors, environmental monitoring and automatic brightness control, are now operating in the districts of Rüttenscheid and Altenessen.
The project is part of the city’s “Essen. Digital 2030” strategy, aimed at reducing energy consumption and increasing public safety. The lamps detect pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, adjusting their brightness only when needed. During quiet periods, they switch to an energy-saving mode, reducing electricity usage by 40–60%.
The system also collects data on traffic flow, light conditions and activity patterns. This information will help the city optimize infrastructure planning and prepare for further expansion of the project.
According to city officials, the technology not only improves efficiency but also enhances residents’ sense of safety. Brighter light in critical moments reduces accident risks and makes public spaces more comfortable.
The results of the pilot phase will be evaluated in early 2026, followed by a decision on expanding the system to additional districts.
The administration emphasizes that Smart Street Lighting is an important step toward a modern, sustainable and digitally connected Essen.
