Kunsthalle Augsburg: New Name and Concept

Kunsthalle Augsburg: New Name and Concept

17.12.2025 105

A significant change in the cultural life of Augsburg has been announced: the Zentrum für Gegenwartskunst will officially be renamed Kunsthalle Augsburg. The new name and the revised concept will come into effect at the beginning of 2026. The decision was taken by the city authorities and the responsible cultural committee in December 2025 and has already attracted considerable interest within the art community.

The renaming represents more than just a change of name; it marks a strategic shift in the institution’s development. While the center previously focused primarily on contemporary art, Kunsthalle Augsburg will in the future cover a broader historical and artistic spectrum – ranging from 20th-century art to contemporary movements of the 21st century. This will enable the museum to present both large temporary exhibitions and long-term projects based on its own collection.

The exhibition spaces within the Glaspalast will retain their structural layout but will be conceptually redefined. Hall 1 is intended for major international and thematic exhibitions, including projects featuring prominent artists and complex displays requiring special exhibition and conservation conditions. Hall 2 will serve as a space for the museum’s collection, smaller exhibitions, as well as works of graphic art, photography, and media art.

According to city representatives, the new name Kunsthalle Augsburg more accurately reflects the institution’s ambitions and its role within Germany’s museum landscape. The “Kunsthalle” format is traditionally associated with openness to different artistic periods and experimental approaches, helping to strengthen Augsburg’s position as an important cultural center in Bavaria.

It is expected that the updated concept will attract a broader audience, including both local residents and tourists interested in art and architecture. City officials emphasize that the changes are aimed at the long-term development of Augsburg’s cultural infrastructure and at increasing the city’s visibility on both national and international levels.
