The city of Cologne has launched a communication campaign aimed at changing public perception of the renovation of the municipal theatres at Offenbachplatz. The initiative accompanies the planned reopening of the cultural complex after years of reconstruction.
According to decisions by the city council, around €2.1 million has been allocated for a nationwide marketing campaign. Its purpose is to draw attention to the upcoming reopening of the theatre buildings and highlight their importance for Cologne’s cultural life.
In addition, approximately €1.4 million has been reserved for multi-day opening festivals and cultural events that will accompany the reopening of the venue.
The campaign operates under the slogan “Deine Bühne, Köln” (“Your Stage, Cologne”). Its goal is to reposition Offenbachplatz and the theatre buildings as a lively place for culture, exchange and urban identity.
One of the first visible elements of the campaign is the so-called “Frustzaun” (“frustration fence”). Headlines from past years that reflected criticism and public debate about the renovation are displayed on a long construction fence surrounding the site.
In the next stage, artists from different parts of Cologne will transform the installation into a creative art project. The action is intended to symbolically move from the difficult history of the renovation toward a new chapter for the cultural venue.
The renovation of the theatres in central Cologne has been one of the most discussed urban projects in recent years. City officials hope that the campaign and the planned cultural events will help shape a new image of Offenbachplatz as a modern cultural centre.
